Eastlake High School Wolves: Game Bites
|
Varsity State 4A Round 1 Game Bites Tuesday 5/17/2011 at EHS 7pm:
Return to State: tonight Eastlake battles Narrows League power Gig Harbor in the first round of the 4A State Tournament. The Wolves secured its first tournament bid since 2008 (3rd place) when it blanked Skyline 2-0 for the KingCo crown. Sean Klauer knocked in both goals while EHS recorded its sixth straight shutout. The Wolves have claimed two prior 4A titles in 1996-97. Gig Harbor is making its 7th trip to State since 2000 (best placing – 3rd 2003). The Tides finished, uh, tied for first in the competitive Narrows League with Bellarmine Prep and an eyelash ahead of defending 4A champ Stadium. They earned their way in with a 3-0 toppling of Mount Rainier Saturday led by goals from Victor Akoi, Braden Stepp and Korey Durkee. The onrushing Tides are currently riding a 12-game (11-0-1) unbeaten streak. Tonight it’s sink or swim time, with the winner going on to the quarterfinals.
Varsity Wolves KingCo 4A Tournament Game Bite, Tuesday 5/10/2011:
It all comes down to this: Plateau rivals Eastlake and Skyline battle for the 2011 KingCo 4A championship and the much coveted #1 seed to the State Tournament which begins next week. Just two weeks ago at Spartan Stadium, the Wolves earned the home pitch advantage by eking out a hard-fought 1-0 decision on a lunging Sawyer Preston rebound. EHS enters the final riding a five-game winning streak and has now gone an amazing 455 minutes without yielding a goal! Skyline has likewise been stingy this season on defense, allowing just 14 goals in 15 games. The Spartans’ attack is led by seniors Braxton Griffin and Travis Strawn (9 goals each). The Wolves were rewarded for their balanced team play with 11 all-league selections, led by first-teamers Michael Gallagher, Cole Glover, and Sean Klauer. Buckle up for what should be a classic showdown.
Tuesday 4/26 Eastlake Varsity Wolves defeat Skyline 1-0 to keep our Pack at #1!

Varsity Game Bite #8 Tue 4-19-2011:
Eastlake had an unexpectedly easy time of it on Friday 4-15-2011, blanking Woodinville 6-0. The Wolves scored early and often, with three goals in the first 10 minutes by Sam Langston, Sawyer Preston, and James Gee. Madison Heck later notched a pair, bookended by Sean Klauer’s team-leading 9th tally. Keeper Devon DeAlteriis and the ‘D’ backboned the team’s 1st shutout. Tonight begins a crucial pair of matches with Issaquah and Skyline. The three local rivals are part of a four-way gridlock with Garfield as the season winds down to the final two weeks. The Eagles are flying high with four straight wins, including three in a row by one goal. They are led by sophomore Alex Shane, currently KingCo’s 2nd leader goal scorer (11), while senior tri-captain Michael Roberts paces the league with 10 assists. EHS beat Issaquah twice last year, including a season-ending defeat for the Eagles. 4/19 Game result: EHS wins 4-0!
Varsity Game Bites #4 & #5 Fri 3-25 & Sat 3-26-2011:
Eastlake brought out the set pieces Tuesday as they decorated the early season KingCo table with a rousing 5-1 feast of Ballard. The Wolves gorged on two corners, a direct kick and off a throw-in, essentially putting the match away by halftime. Gerard Galvin opened the scoring, heading in a corner on the first of Evan Yamada’s three brilliant assists. After the Beavers countered with their only goal, James Gee gave EHS the advantage for good, taking in stride Yamada’s lead ball for a nice finish in the 25th. Sean Klauer showed the way from there with a hat trick, including a tap-in from a Michael Gallagher direct/Gerard Galvin header combo, a crushing header from another Yamada corner, and a pounding finish of an Austin Aumell throw. Next up is old rival Redmond Friday and a final non-league match with Kennedy Catholic Saturday afternoon.
PRE-SEASON
Varsity Game Bite #3 Tue 3-22-2011:
The 1’s are wild as the Wolves and Beavers lock jaws tonight in the KingCo league opener of 1-1-1 sides. Eastlake needed every last second Friday to earn a deadlock with Union of Vancouver. Down 3-1 late, Chris Discolo’s well-placed direct kick in the 64th helped mount the EHS comeback. As the final whistle approached, Gerard Galvin sloshed a hard liner just inside the post for the equalizer. Sam Langston scored the Wolves’ first goal with a 20-yard bomb off an Evan Yamada lead ball. Ballard is guided by co-captains Brent Campbell and Sofien El-Mehrik, who combined for all three goals in Ballard’s season-opening win against Kamiak. The road to the KingCo title begins tonight!
Varsity Game Bite #2 Fri 3-18-2011:
Eastlake quickly bounced back from an opening night 3-1 setback to Marysville-Pilchuck with a rousing 4-1 thrashing of Mt. Si Wednesday. The Wolves (and the weather) had first-half lightning strikes as James Gee twice finished brilliant lead balls from Cole Glover and Evan Yamada. Austin Aumell’s well-placed floater and Chris Discolo’s strong rebound rap rounded out the EHS scoring. You might remember the Titans, who the Wolves nipped last season in Vancouver, 3-2. Union tied its opener and is coming off a 7-6-3 mark in 2010. They are led by three-time 1st team-GSHL forward Michael Granados and junior Mikhail Doholis who scored 13 goals his freshman season and has trained with the U-17 national team.
Varsity Game Bite #1 Tue 3-15-2011:
Eastlake launched the 2011 campaign with a good pre-season test against Marysville-Pilchuck (M-P). The Tomahawks, out of the WesCo North, notched an impressive 12-5-1 record in 2010 and were state quarter-finalists after a semi-final finish in 2009. M-P returns 11 seniors including GK Kyle Bluhm, who even scored a goal in a state 1st round shootout win. The Wolves come off last year’s fine 10-5-3 mark, including a hearty playoff run that left them one win short of the State tourney. Eastlake returns 12 seniors led by tri-captains Gerard Galvin, Sawyer Preston and Sean Klauer. A busy opening week awaits the Wolves – later this week, EHS plays two more non-league tune-ups with Mount Si and Union High Schools.
